He Bought a Watch for $6: Then Found $2,000 Hidden Inside

An ordinary thrift-store purchase turned into a viral social media mystery after a young man in the U.S. claimed that a $6 watch contained an unexpected surprise: nearly $2,000 in cash.

At first glance, the watch appeared fairly ordinary. But according to the buyer, things became strange before he had even left the store.

He said two strangers began following him and later approached him as he made his way toward his car. In the parking lot, they reportedly offered to buy the watch from him for around 17 times what he had just paid for it.

He turned down the offer, but the unusual encounter made him curious about what he had purchased.

What Was Hidden Inside the $6 Watch?

Once inside his car, the young man examined the watch more closely and noticed a small compartment on the back. Wondering whether something might be hidden inside, he opened it.

To his astonishment, he claimed to find tightly packed bundles of cash concealed inside the watch.

“I just paid six dollars for this watch—this is crazy!” he exclaimed in the video as he began pulling bills from the compartment.

The unusual discovery did not end there. In a follow-up video, the buyer filmed himself visiting a bank, where he said he deposited approximately $2,000 in cash. Most of the money consisted of smaller bills.

According to him, the watch was unusually large, leaving enough space inside its body for the bills to be tightly folded and stored.

The videos quickly attracted widespread attention, racking up millions of views and prompting plenty of reactions from viewers fascinated by the idea of an unexpected thrift-store treasure.

But not everyone was convinced that the discovery was genuine.

Some commenters questioned how such a large amount of cash could have remained hidden inside an item that eventually made its way onto a thrift-store shelf. They argued that donated merchandise is typically handled or inspected before being sold, raising suspicions that the cash may have been planted as part of a staged video.

Others suggested the entire story could have been created to generate views and online engagement.

For now, the extraordinary thrift-store discovery remains the buyer’s account, and the viral footage alone does not settle whether the $2,000 really spent years hidden inside an old watch or whether viewers were watching a carefully planned social media stunt.

Either way, the $6 purchase succeeded in becoming considerably more valuable than an ordinary secondhand find—at least when it came to attracting millions of curious viewers.
