Watermelon Collagen Smoothie: A Refreshing Summer Drink

This easy watermelon collagen smoothie combines fresh watermelon, lemon, mint, honey, and collagen peptides for a refreshing summer drink

I admit, at first I was skeptical. Watermelon is already one of the most delicious fruits of summer, so why add anything to it? Why turn it into a drink, however tasty that drink might be? That was my initial reaction. But then, perhaps because of the countless videos I had seen on social media over the past week, I decided to give it a try.

After my first attempt, I realized something was missing. It took me a while to figure out exactly what it was, but fortunately, I genuinely enjoy challenges involving flavors. After making this drink several times, I can confidently say that this is the recipe that works best for me.

Regardless of exactly what you put into this drink, there was one ingredient that appeared in virtually every variation I came across: collagen powder.

Why Collagen?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body. It is a major component of our skin, tendons, cartilage, bones, and connective tissues. As we grow older, particularly beginning in our mid twenties, the body gradually produces less collagen naturally. This is one of the reasons the skin gradually loses some of its elasticity and wrinkles begin to appear.

For this reason, many people choose to incorporate collagen powder into their daily diet.

Hydrolyzed collagen, also known as collagen peptides or collagen hydrolysate, is collagen that has undergone an enzymatic process that breaks it down into smaller protein fragments called peptides.

The reason for this process is simple. Natural collagen molecules are very large, making them more difficult for the body to digest and absorb. After hydrolysis, the smaller peptides dissolve easily in water and other beverages and are more readily absorbed by the digestive system.

One reason hydrolyzed collagen is commonly used in smoothies is that good quality collagen powder is nearly tasteless. This allows it to blend easily into a drink without significantly changing its texture or flavor.

Several studies have found that taking hydrolyzed collagen daily for several months may contribute to modest improvements in skin elasticity and hydration, reduce skin dryness in some people, strengthen nails in certain cases, and provide some relief from joint discomfort for some users.

However, results are not the same for everyone, and research in this area is still developing. There is therefore no guarantee that every person will experience the same effects.

Who Should Be Cautious?

Although collagen is generally considered safe for most people, there are circumstances in which it is advisable to consult a doctor or dietitian before beginning to use it:

  • People with fish allergies, if the collagen is derived from marine sources.

  • People with allergies to beef or poultry, depending on the source of the collagen.

  • Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to become pregnant should consult their doctor before using dietary supplements.

  • Anyone with a chronic medical condition or who regularly takes medication, particularly if a doctor has advised avoiding certain supplements.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups seedless watermelon, cubed

  • 1/2 cup ice

  • Juice of half a lemon

  • 1 to 2 teaspoons honey

  • 8 to 10 fresh mint leaves with reliable kosher certification, cleaned for insects according to the instructions on the package

  • 1 tablespoon high quality, unflavored collagen powder, available with kosher certification

  • A small amount of cold water, optional, for a thinner consistency

Preparation

  1. Place the watermelon, ice, lemon juice, honey, and mint leaves in a blender.

  2. Blend until completely smooth.

  3. Add the collagen powder and blend for another few seconds until fully incorporated.

  4. Pour into a tall glass, garnish with a few mint leaves, and serve immediately.

Important note: For many collagen powders, a typical daily serving is between 5 and 10 grams, but it is important to follow the manufacturer’s directions for the specific product you are using.
