Put Down the Bag: A Powerful Lesson About Forgiveness
Forgiving someone does not erase what happened, but it can free you from carrying the pain. A powerful story about letting go of resentment and moving forward.

One day in social studies class, a teacher asked her students to bring a plastic bag and a sack of potatoes to school the following day.
When the students arrived with their potatoes and bags, the teacher gave them an unusual assignment.
“For every person who has hurt you and whom you have not forgiven, choose one potato. Write that person’s name on it and place it in your plastic bag.”
The students began thinking about the people who had hurt them over the years. Some wrote the names of children they had fought with in preschool or elementary school. Others thought of people who had offended or disappointed them and toward whom they still carried resentment.
One by one, the potatoes went into the bags.
It did not take long to notice that some bags were much heavier than others.
Then the teacher gave them the second part of the assignment.
“Now you must carry this bag with you everywhere you go for an entire month.”
Carrying the Weight of Resentment
The students followed their teacher’s instructions. For the next month, their bags went everywhere with them: to school, to after school activities, to the playground, and even to bed.
Everywhere they went, they had to carry the weight.
Day after day, the bags became increasingly uncomfortable. What had started as a simple classroom exercise became a burden that followed them through their daily lives.
At the end of the month, the teacher gathered the students together again.
“This exercise,” she explained, “shows us the price we pay when we hold on to hurt and anger. Sometimes we think forgiving someone is a gift we are giving to the person who hurt us. But forgiveness is also a gift we give ourselves. When we release resentment, we free our hearts from a burden and make room for greater happiness and joy.”
The lesson was simple but powerful. Holding on to anger can feel like carrying a heavy bag everywhere we go. The person who hurt us may not even realize we are still thinking about what happened, yet we continue carrying the weight.
Forgiveness allows us to begin putting that burden down.
Give Yourself the Gift of Forgiveness
Life is too precious to spend carrying resentment and anger.
Think about the painful feelings that may have accumulated in your heart over the years. Perhaps there are old arguments you still replay, words you have never forgotten, or people whose names still awaken anger within you.
Holding on to that pain does not make life easier. It makes the bag heavier.
Give yourself the gift of forgiveness. Cleanse your heart of resentment, put down the “heavy bag,” and allow yourself to move forward without carrying unnecessary weight from the past.
And when we forgive others, we can also hope and pray that Heaven will show mercy and forgiveness toward us.
Forgiveness does not erase what happened, but it can change what we continue carrying because of it.
Put down the bag.
