President Donald Trump announced overnight (between Wednesday and Thursday) a dramatic escalation in U.S. pressure on Iran, unveiling what he called “the most crushing economic operation ever undertaken against any country.” In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the move would include an effort to economically isolate Tehran, alongside threats of measures against countries and entities that continue commercial ties with it.

The American president wrote: “No one gave the Islamic Republic a greater opportunity to make a deal than I did. Tragically for them, they did not take it. Therefore, today, I am announcing the most crushing economic operation ever undertaken against any country!”

Trump did not specify which measures would be included in the new operation, but described it as “economic warfare and isolation on an unprecedented scale.” According to him, Iran’s current situation makes it especially vulnerable: “Its navy is gone, its air force has been destroyed, its military factories are in ruins, its currency is worthless, and its country is hanging by a thread.”

At the center of Trump's strategy is an effort to deter other countries from continuing economic activity with Tehran. He warned that any country allowing economic ties with Iran, through financial or government institutions, businesses, or even airports within its territory, could itself face economic consequences: “Oil smuggling, exchange lines, cash transfers, money changers, vessel registrations, shell companies, it all must stop now.”

He later compared the move to the Allied invasion of Normandy during World War II: “This will be an economic D-Day, and we need all of our allies to isolate and defeat the Iranian threat. These lunatics are on the verge of defeat, and these historic measures will silence them and their ability to inflict terror around the world. Iran will never have a nuclear weapon.”

Trump’s announcement comes after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent signaled the approaching measures over the weekend: “We are going to implement measures never before seen in Iran.” According to him, “It will be a combination of economic isolation the world has never seen before, and the ongoing blockade in the Strait of Hormuz that will prevent anything from entering or leaving Iran’s ports.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded to Trump’s announcement, claiming that it was “a distraction from America’s own crisis: unprecedented debt and rising prices. Raising the stakes on a failed policy will only bring another defeat. America’s economic terrorism threatens the global economy and sovereignty around the world.”
