President Donald Trump held a press conference at the White House this evening (Wednesday) and officially announced that the last American soldier has left Iraqi soil. He then briefly addressed negotiations with Iran, saying: "You’ll see very significant developments very soon."

Meanwhile, Iran said today that it had received an American response to its latest proposal to revive the collapsed ceasefire in the Gulf. The announcement came just days after President Trump said he had rejected it.

Last week, Iran presented a proposal under which the United States would lift its blockade of Iranian ports, and Iran would reopen the disrupted Strait of Hormuz within seven days.

Trump said on Sunday that he had rejected the proposal, although Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi claimed that Tehran had not received a formal rejection notice. In a post on X on Wednesday, an Iranian government spokesperson said that Araghchi had conveyed the U.S. response to the Iranian government.

Iran says its plan is intended to restore an interim agreement that collapsed just weeks after it was signed by Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in June.

Last week, Qatari mediators held a round of talks between American and Iranian envoys in New York, on the sidelines of a United Nations gathering. These were the first indirect talks between the warring sides since the ceasefire collapsed.

A source familiar with the talks, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said the Qataris updated Araghchi on the U.S. response on Tuesday, when he stopped in Doha on his way back from New York. According to the source, the sides largely agree on the steps required but remain divided over the order in which they should be carried out. Iran wants any future agreement to give it control over the Strait of Hormuz, the world’s most important oil-shipping route, which runs near its coast.
