A Siddur in Your Bag: Can You Enter the Bathroom With It?

What should you do if your bag contains a siddur, Torah texts, or food when you need to use the bathroom? Here are the practical halachic guidelines.

aA

Whether you’re carrying a bag with a siddur or other Torah texts, or you accidentally walk into a bathroom with food in your pocket, the question can easily come up: What does halacha require? Here are the basic guidelines for bringing sacred texts and food into a bathroom.

Question

May you bring a bag containing Torah texts or food into the bathroom?

The Short Answer

Torah texts: Handwritten Torah texts should be protected with two coverings before being brought into a bathroom. For printed Torah texts, some authorities say that one covering is sufficient. In extenuating circumstances, when there is no way to leave them outside, one may be lenient and bring them in even without a covering.

Food: Ideally, food should not be brought into a bathroom, even when it is in a closed container. If it was brought in, it is proper to wash it three times afterward. If the food cannot be washed, it is permitted to eat according to the letter of the law, although it is preferable to be stringent and refrain from eating it.
