The Hidden Purpose of the Drawer Under Your Oven

That convenient drawer under your oven isn’t always meant for baking sheets. Discover what it’s actually designed to do and what you shouldn’t store there.

That drawer beneath your oven might seem like an obvious place to store baking sheets and pans, but that’s not always what it was designed for.

Depending on your oven, the lower drawer could be meant for storage, keeping food warm, or even broiling. Before putting anything inside, it’s important to know which type you have.

Storage Drawer

This is one of the most common types found in home ovens. It is designed to store items such as baking sheets, oven racks, and heat-safe cookware. Some manufacturers, including Samsung, specifically identify the lower drawer on certain models as a storage space for oven accessories.

But even a storage drawer can become hot when the oven is running. Avoid keeping plastic utensils, paper products, dish towels, bags, cleaning supplies, or anything flammable inside.

Warming Drawer

Some ovens have a lower drawer equipped with a heating element and temperature controls. Rather than providing extra storage, this drawer is designed to keep cooked food warm until it’s time to serve.

Depending on the model, it may also be suitable for warming plates or proofing dough.

A warming drawer is generally not intended to fully cook raw food. Always check your oven’s instructions before using it for any purpose other than keeping food warm.

Broiler Drawer

On some ovens, particularly certain gas ranges, the compartment beneath the oven is actually a broiler.

A broiler uses intense heat to quickly brown or sear food. Because this compartment can become extremely hot, it should never be treated as an ordinary storage drawer. Only place cookware or equipment inside that the manufacturer specifically says is safe to use there.

How Can You Tell Which Drawer You Have?

Start by looking at your oven’s control panel. If you see a setting labeled “Warming,” “Drawer,” or “Broil,” that can offer an important clue about the compartment’s purpose.

You can also look inside the drawer. A rack or dedicated broiler pan may indicate that it is designed for broiling, while temperature controls may point to a warming drawer.

But don’t rely on appearances alone. The safest and most reliable way to find out is to locate your oven’s model number and check the owner’s manual.

So before you automatically fill that convenient drawer with baking sheets, take a moment to check what it was actually designed to do. You may discover that it has an entirely different purpose.
