Alush, who has become increasingly observant in recent years, opened up about his complicated relationship with social media and the pressure to constantly remain visible online.
“Beyond the theft of time and the manipulation, there is something about this ritual we have created in our lives: If I don’t constantly share and post content and maintain this thing called my profile, then I don’t exist. I completely understand why we think that way.”
Finding Something Valuable in the Quiet
Alush explained that stepping away from the constant pressure to post and seek attention has allowed him to appreciate something much simpler.
“It is precisely in this quiet, in not making an effort to show and be seen, and to receive validation from the outside world and from the algorithm joining the celebration... there is something pleasant and simple in this quiet.”
Alush has also shared his desire to focus more on unity among the Jewish people and on studying Torah.
“Of course, I’m not making declarations, and every so often I go in and scroll through the flood of content washing over our consciousness and the world. It feels like you can’t see the forest for all the bears... the truth is missing, especially during an election period,” he added.
“I Found Nothing Better Than Silence”
Alush concluded his post by explaining that his silence does not mean he has nothing to say. In fact, he suggested that the opposite may be true.
“When Mr. Lie goes to visit his friend, another Mr. Lie, then for now I don’t really have much to say. Or rather, with so many things I feel like saying, I prefer to remain silent.”
He then turned to the wisdom of the Mishnah to sum up his thoughts:
“All my days I grew up among the sages, and I found nothing better for the body than silence.”
For Alush, stepping away from the constant noise of social media appears to have offered something increasingly difficult to find online: the value of simply being quiet.
