Israeli actor Danny Steg has grown increasingly connected to Jewish observance in recent years. He now keeps Shabbat, wears a hat, has grown a beard, and speaks openly about living a life centered on Torah.

In an interview on the program Shabbat Mikol HaSibot, Steg shared some of the spiritual insights he has discovered, particularly about marriage, the role of women, and the Divine Presence within the Jewish home.

The Deeper Meaning of Eshet Chayil

Speaking about Eshet Chayil (“A Woman of Valor”), the passage from Proverbs traditionally sung to one's wife on Friday night, Steg explained its deeper spiritual meaning.

“Eshet Chayil was written about the Shechinah, the Divine Presence,” he said. “King Solomon wrote it at the end of Proverbs. He actually wrote this song about the Shechinah: ‘A woman of valor, who can find? Her worth is far beyond pearls’ (Proverbs 31:10).”

Steg described how singing these words can transform the way a husband sees his wife. “You sing this to your wife, and right before your eyes, she becomes the most amazing woman in the world.”

He then shared a personal milestone. “Yesterday, my wife and I celebrated 31 years of marriage,” he said. “When I sing this to my wife, I also consciously think about the Shechinah, because she truly represents the Divine Presence in the home.”

Steg went on to describe the relationship between husband and wife through the symbolism of the sun and moon. “The woman is the moon, and the husband is the sun. She receives his light,” he explained.

He also emphasized his belief that a woman's words carry spiritual significance. “Everything that comes out of her mouth, not just my wife's, but every woman's, is something Hashem has brought to her.”

Why Listening to Your Wife Matters

To illustrate the importance of listening to one's wife, Steg cited Hashem's instruction to Abraham concerning Sarah: “Whatever Sarah tells you, listen to her voice” (Genesis 21:12).

At the conclusion of the discussion, the interviewer offered a spiritual interpretation of the verse, suggesting that listening to a woman's voice can also be understood as listening for Hashem's guidance.

The conversation highlighted Steg's understanding of marriage as more than a partnership. For him, it is also a spiritual relationship in which love, respect, and attentiveness to one's spouse are deeply connected to faith.
