When fruit is naturally sweet and juicy, there’s no need to make things complicated. Choose a few seasonal favorites, chop them up, toss them together, and serve chilled.
At the end of August, grapes, peaches and nectarines, mangoes, watermelon, cantaloupe, and figs come together beautifully in a colorful fruit salad. A simple citrus, honey, and mint dressing adds just enough flavor without overpowering the fruit.
End-of-Summer Fruit Salad
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cantaloupe
- 2 large slices watermelon
- 1 mango
- 2 peaches or nectarines
- 1 cup grapes
- 5–6 figs
Cut the cantaloupe, watermelon, mango, and peaches or nectarines into bite-size pieces. If the grapes are large, cut them in half, and quarter the figs.
Transfer everything to a large bowl and toss gently so the softer fruit doesn’t get crushed.
A Simple Dressing That Makes It Even Better
In a small bowl, combine:
- Juice of 1/2 lemon or lime
- 1 teaspoon honey
- A few fresh mint leaves, finely chopped
Pour the dressing over the fruit just before serving and toss gently to combine.
The salad tastes best after a short chill in the refrigerator. However, avoid preparing it too many hours in advance, as the watermelon, cantaloupe, and peaches will begin to release liquid and the salad can become watery.
If you want to get a head start, cut the fruit ahead of time and store the different types separately in the refrigerator. Shortly before serving, combine everything in a bowl, add the dressing, and toss gently for a fresh, colorful end-of-summer treat.
