Trump Makes Dramatic Iran Prediction: ‘The War Will End Immediately After the Midterms’

President Donald Trump said Wednesday evening that he believes the war will end “immediately” after the U.S. midterm elections, set for November 3. He made the remarks amid renewed escalation with Iran and a surge in oil prices, after the price of a barrel of crude oil crossed the $100 mark today. According to Trump, prices are expected to fall, but only after the election.

Speaking with reporters before departing for a Republican conference in Dallas, Trump was asked why he was so certain the war would end immediately after the election. In response, he attacked Democrats and argued that Tehran hopes to influence the outcome of the vote: “They [the Iranians] can’t hold on anymore. They’re desperate to try to influence the election so that we get a nice, weak group of people in there [the Democrats], who will leave them alone and allow them to get their nuclear weapon. All they want is a nuclear weapon, and if they get a nuclear weapon, the whole world will be in very serious trouble.”

Trump’s statement comes alongside a significant diplomatic development. For the first time in 20 years, the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) approved referring the Iran issue to the U.N. Security Council, following its determination that Tehran is violating its commitments under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

The proposal was led by the United States, Britain, France, and Germany, and won the support of 23 of the 35 countries on the Board of Governors. Russia, China, and Niger opposed it, eight countries abstained, and one did not participate in the vote. Still, no immediate practical consequences in the form of new sanctions are expected at this stage, since Russia and China, which hold veto power in the Security Council, are expected to block such a move. Even so, the referral itself is seen as a diplomatic escalation by the West, and Iran has already threatened to respond.

The move follows the IAEA’s June 12, 2025 decision, one day before Israel launched the “Rising Lion” war against Iran, at the end of which the United States struck the country’s key nuclear facilities. At that time, too, it was determined that Tehran was violating its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
