Defense Failure: Iran Damages Nine U.S. Military Aircraft
Nine American aircraft were damaged in an Iranian attack on a base in Jordan, including eight F-15 fighter jets and an A-10 that was taken out of operational service. The Iranian attack took place earlier this week.
IllustrationCBS reported today (Thursday) that at least nine U.S. military aircraft, including eight fighter jets, were damaged in an Iranian attack earlier this week on a U.S. base in Jordan.
According to the report, the attack took place overnight between Monday and Tuesday at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan. No casualties were reported among the American forces stationed at the base, but the aircraft were damaged. Eight F-15 jets sustained minor damage, were repaired, and returned to operational service. One A-10 Thunderbolt was damaged and lost its operational capability.
The Iranian attack came in response to a U.S. strike targeting five Iranian oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. That American strike was itself a response to Iran launching missiles at a U.S. military aircraft carrier operating near the strait.
CBS reported that U.S. military forces in Jordan launched more than 30 Patriot missiles to defend against the Iranian attacks. That did not prevent at least two missiles from landing and damaging aircraft on the ground.
