Paris Is Named the World’s Least Welcoming City, Amid Rising Antisemitism

The Daily Mail’s international travel-destination ranking, based on traveler reviews and expert analysis, identifies Paris as the leading city for negative treatment of visitors. Tourists report scowls, rude responses, and a reluctance to offer help. For Jewish and Israeli travelers, however, the problem in France goes beyond basic questions of courtesy, reaching the level of a tense and threatening climate amid a widespread rise in antisemitic incidents on the streets of Paris.

Travel experts explain that some of what is perceived as rudeness stems from cultural differences. But beyond the everyday conduct of city life, members of the local Jewish community and visitors report a growing sense of insecurity. The reality on Parisian streets includes repeated cases of harassment, hateful graffiti in public spaces, and hostile treatment specifically directed at people displaying visible Jewish symbols.

Jo Hayes, founder of the EtiquetteExpert website, told the Daily Mail that Parisians have difficulty accepting those who are different, and that the treatment is especially harsh toward people who do not speak the local language. While the attitude may be more forgiving in rural areas of France, in Paris itself, the combination of burnout from mass tourism and internal social tensions creates a charged atmosphere that seriously damages the sense of hospitality and is a source of concern for Jews around the world.

Alongside Paris, the international ranking includes other popular destinations that drew harsh criticism from travelers. In Italy, ranked second, visitors report impatience and short-tempered treatment from locals, mainly because heavy tourism creates daily friction on the streets. Germany also made the list following complaints of coldness and rudeness at service counters and train stations, though experts explain this as a local aversion to small talk.

In South Korea, tourists reported feeling like outsiders, encountering an unwillingness to help and being pushed through crowded streets. New York was named the least friendly city in the United States. Montenegro closes out the list, where many travelers describe hostile looks, mockery, and a general sense that foreigners are not welcome.
