Every home seems to have that one place where bags accumulate: a drawer that barely closes, an overflowing cabinet, or one large bag stuffed with dozens of smaller ones. We keep them because they might come in handy, but when the collection grows without limits, it quickly becomes a constant source of clutter.

Fortunately, getting it under control does not require an elaborate organization system. A few simple rules can keep your bags tidy, accessible, and limited to what you actually use.

Take Everything Out and Start Sorting

Start by emptying all your bags into one place. Seeing the entire collection at once makes it much easier to realize just how many have accumulated.

Separate them into categories such as reusable shopping bags, small plastic bags, paper bags, and trash bags. Throw away anything that is torn, dirty, or no longer usable. Before folding and storing a bag, check inside for old receipts, crumbs, moisture, or forgotten items.

Set a Limit

There is no need to keep every bag that enters your home. Decide how many of each type you realistically need. You might keep a few reusable bags for grocery shopping, several smaller bags for household use, and a reasonable supply of trash bags.

Then give each category a designated container or storage space. Once it is full, that is your sign that you do not need to add any more. This simple boundary prevents the collection from gradually taking over again.

Store Bags Without Sacrificing an Entire Cabinet

Fold reusable shopping bags into rectangles and stand them side by side in a basket, almost like books on a shelf. This makes it easy to see what you have and pull out one bag without disturbing the rest.

Plastic bags can be flattened to remove excess air and folded into small triangles. For a quicker option, place them in a narrow holder, box, or cloth dispenser that allows you to pull them out one at a time.

Paper bags should be folded flat and kept somewhere dry. If a paper bag is wet, torn, or badly misshapen, there is little reason to keep it.

Do Not Store Dirty Reusable Bags

Reusable shopping bags can get dirty, especially when they are used to carry food. If a bag has come into contact with liquids, raw meat or poultry, or dirty produce, clean it according to the care instructions for its material before storing it again.

It can also be helpful to designate certain bags for food and keep them separate from bags used to carry cleaning products or other household items.

Plastic bags should always be stored safely out of the reach of babies and young children because they can pose a suffocation hazard.

What Should You Do With the Extras?

If you have more bags than you need, dispose of or recycle them according to the recycling guidelines in your area.

And once everything is organized, remember one simple rule: give each type of bag a designated storage space and do not let the collection grow beyond it. That way, the bag drawer might finally close without a fight.
