Make Room for Sukkot: How to Organize Your Refrigerator

A packed refrigerator can make Sukkot cooking even more stressful. Here’s how to organize your fridge and freezer before the holiday begins.

Sukkot is just a few days away, which means the cooking is about to begin.

But before the pots start filling up, there is one job many of us would rather avoid: opening the refrigerator and figuring out whether there is actually room for everything.

Old containers, nearly empty jars, forgotten produce, and leftovers of uncertain age can take up valuable space and make it much harder to find what you need. Spending half an hour organizing the refrigerator now can free up space, reduce food waste, and make holiday cooking and hosting much easier.

Here’s how to get your refrigerator ready for Sukkot.

Start by Clearing Things Out

Begin with a thorough cleanout. Throw away expired products, leftovers that have been sitting around too long or whose preparation date you cannot remember, and empty or nearly empty containers you no longer need.

Check the produce drawers carefully, too. Wilted leaves, forgotten herbs, and vegetables past their best have a habit of hiding at the bottom.

Once everything unnecessary is out, wipe down the shelves and drawers. Starting with a clean, organized refrigerator will make the next few days of cooking much easier.

Divide the Refrigerator Into Zones

Organizing foods by category can make it much easier to find what you need, especially when the refrigerator starts filling up before the holiday.

Use the upper shelves for prepared foods, desserts, and other ready-to-eat items. Keep frequently used products together so you do not have to move half the refrigerator every time you need something.

Raw meat, chicken, and fish should be stored securely on the bottom shelf in sealed containers or packaging. Keeping them below ready-to-eat foods helps prevent liquids from dripping onto other items.

The refrigerator door is best suited to less temperature-sensitive products such as sauces, condiments, and some drinks, since temperatures there can fluctuate more as the door is opened and closed.

Don’t Overpack the Refrigerator

With several Sukkot meals ahead, it can be tempting to squeeze something into every available corner. But an overpacked refrigerator does not necessarily work efficiently.

Cold air needs room to circulate. When containers are packed too tightly together or air vents are blocked, some areas may not stay as cold as they should.

Leave some space between items where possible, avoid blocking the vents, and make sure your refrigerator is maintaining a safe temperature of 40°F (4°C) or below.

Store Prepared Dishes Efficiently

Large pots can quickly take over the refrigerator, especially when you are cooking for several holiday meals.

When practical, transfer prepared foods into shallow, covered containers that can be stacked safely. This can save valuable shelf space and help food cool more quickly.

There is also no need to leave cooked food sitting on the counter for hours before refrigerating it. Divide large quantities into smaller or shallower containers and refrigerate them promptly. Make sure everything is properly covered before storing it.

Label What You Made and When

Once the refrigerator fills up, remembering what is inside every container becomes surprisingly difficult.

Label dishes with their names and, when useful, the date they were prepared. You can also dedicate one shelf or section to dishes intended for a particular Sukkot meal.

When it is time to serve or reheat the food, you will know exactly where everything is instead of searching through stacks of containers while guests are waiting.

Don’t Forget the Freezer

The freezer deserves a quick cleanout before Sukkot, too.

Remove empty packaging, combine duplicate bags where appropriate, and move older foods toward the front so they are more likely to be used.

If you are preparing dishes ahead of time and freezing them, divide them into practical portions and label each one with the contents and preparation date.

And if possible, leave a little empty space. After several Sukkot meals, you may be very grateful to have somewhere to put the leftovers.

A Little Organization Now Saves Time Later

Preparing for Sukkot can involve a lot of cooking, shopping, hosting, and running back and forth to the kitchen. A well-organized refrigerator may seem like a small detail, but it can make those busy days considerably easier.

Clear out what you no longer need, organize what remains, and leave room for what is coming.

Then, when the holiday cooking begins, at least you won’t have to play refrigerator Tetris with every new dish.
