Hosting in the sukkah often means making endless trips back and forth to the house. Someone needs another cup, the napkins run out, you forgot a serving spoon, and suddenly you have spent half the meal walking between the kitchen and the sukkah.
A simple solution? Before your guests arrive, create a small sukkah station stocked with the things you are most likely to need throughout the meal.
Choose an Easy-to-Reach Spot
Place a small side table, cart, or sturdy shelving unit in a corner of the sukkah where it will be easy to reach without blocking the walkway.
Stock it with plates, cups, silverware, and napkins according to the number of guests, adding a few extras for spills, unexpected guests, or second helpings.
Keeping everything together means guests can also help themselves without having to ask where things are.
Keep Drinks Within Reach
Water bottles and other drinks that do not need refrigeration can be kept at the station so they are easy to grab throughout the meal.
Drinks that need to remain cold should be stored in a cooler with ice packs or kept refrigerated until shortly before they are served, particularly when the weather is warm.
Create a Meal Emergency Kit
Think about the little things you always seem to need once everyone is already seated.
Keep extra napkins, wipes, paper towels, garbage bags, and spare serving utensils together in a basket or container underneath the table.
That way, when something spills or you suddenly discover that the serving spoon is missing, you will not have to run back inside.
What About the Food?
The sukkah station is best used for supplies rather than foods that need to stay cold.
Perishable foods should not be left outside for extended periods, particularly in warm weather. Bring refrigerated dishes out shortly before they are needed and return leftovers to the refrigerator promptly after the meal.
With a little preparation, your sukkah can have almost everything you need close at hand. Fewer trips to the kitchen mean less running around for the host and more time actually sitting, eating, and enjoying Sukkot with your guests.
