Israel Warns Travelers to the Netherlands of Potentially "Intrusive" Customs Checks

Israel’s Foreign Ministry issued a warning today (Monday) to Israelis planning to travel to the Netherlands, following a new order banning the entry of products originating in Judea and Samaria, eastern Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights. The ministry warned that travelers from Israel could face lengthy and "intrusive" customs inspections of their luggage.

The order, which took effect on September 22, states that bringing goods originating in these areas into the country constitutes a criminal offense. Violating the ban could lead to fines and, in serious cases, a prison sentence of up to six years.

The ban is not limited to commercial imports; it also applies to products in travelers’ suitcases intended for personal use or as gifts. Under the new guidelines, travelers may be required to prove the origin of the products they are bringing into the country.

According to the Foreign Ministry, reports have been received in recent days of customs inspections carried out on the luggage of passengers arriving in the Netherlands on flights from Israel. The reports are being reviewed, in part to determine the scope of the inspections and how the order is being implemented in practice.

The Foreign Ministry stressed that "the Israeli government views this move seriously and has taken responsive measures." As part of Israel’s response, the diplomatic status of Dutch representatives in Ramallah was revoked, and at the end of August, two Dutch security-diplomatic representatives operating at the coordination center in the Gaza Strip were expelled.

The Foreign Ministry and Israel’s Embassy in The Hague said they will continue monitoring developments and update the public accordingly.
