(Photo: IDF Spokesperson)This morning (Tuesday), the IDF cleared for publication that four soldiers were killed in a battle in southern Lebanon, in a serious incident that occurred during an operation by the Nachal Brigade's combat team in the western sector.
Killed in the incident were Capt. Noam Madmoni, 22, from Sderot, a team commander in the Nahal Reconnaissance Unit; Staff Sgt. Ben Cohen, 21, from Lehavim, a soldier in the Nahal Reconnaissance Unit; Staff Sgt. Maksim Antis, 21, from Bat Yam; and another soldier whose name has not yet been cleared for publication.
The deadly incident took place during an assault by brigade forces, operating under the command of the 162nd Division, with the goal of achieving operational control in southern Lebanon. According to initial findings, around 6:30 p.m., Nachal Reconnaissance Unit troops identified terrorist cells in the area, leading to a close-range clash.
During the battle, there was an intense exchange of fire between the forces and the terrorists. The troops returned fire at the sources of the shooting, and hits on the terrorists were observed during the fighting. During the engagement, several soldiers were wounded, and the forces on the ground immediately began evacuation toward a designated landing zone.
While rescue operations were underway, the threat from the terrorists continued: an anti-tank missile was fired at the forces in the field, but there were no additional casualties. In response, the forces returned heavy fire, including tank fire as well as airstrikes on enemy positions.
