Ahead of Israel's Memorial Day 2026, 147 More Names Added to the Roll of the Fallen

Defense Ministry update puts the IDF's total fallen since the state's founding at 25,644; National Insurance says 5,313 civilians have been killed in terror since 1851, including 79 this past year.

The Defense Ministry announced today (Sunday) an updated count of the fallen ahead of Israel's Memorial Day 2026. According to the updated data, 147 fallen (IDF casualties) have been added since last Memorial Day. In all, the number of IDF fallen since the establishment of the state stands at 25,644. In addition, 79 civilians were murdered and have been designated as victims of hostilities.

According to Defense Ministry data, since last Memorial Day, 54 disabled IDF veterans who died as a result of their disabilities were recognized during the year as fallen. It should be noted that since October 7, 2023, 7,165 people have joined the circle of bereaved families. Today, 59,583 bereaved family members live in Israel, including 8,420 bereaved parents, 4,872 widows, and 14,430 orphans.

According to the National Insurance Institute: 5,313 civilians have been murdered in terrorist attacks since 1851, the year the Jewish settlement in the Land of Israel was established, 79 of them since last Memorial Day. 620 before the War of Independence, 931 during the War of Independence, 3,762 since the end of the War of Independence.

From the establishment of the state (5 Iyar 5708) to today, 4,587 civilians have been murdered, including 810 children up to age 18. In the past year, from last Memorial Day to today, 79 civilians were murdered in terrorist attacks. 35 of them were murdered during 'Am Kelavi' (June 2026) and 27 during 'Sha'agat Ha'Ari' (March 2026).

The number of civilians murdered stands at 1,017 since the outbreak of the 'Swords of Iron' war. 223 foreign civilians (workers and tourists) have been murdered in Israel from the establishment of the Hebrew settlement to today, 12 of them since the previous Memorial Day.
