Leipzig Police (Photo: Shutterstock)Two people were killed today (Monday) and 20 were injured, including three in serious condition, in a vehicle-ramming attack in the center of Leipzig in eastern Germany. According to German media reports, a Volkswagen SUV sped toward a group of pedestrians on a shopping street in the city center, not far from the local university, and struck them with force.
Afterward, the driver tried to stab passersby, some of whom were already injured. He was subdued by nearby police officers. Medical teams were called to the scene and evacuated the wounded. Two people were pronounced dead at the scene.
Local police said the suspected perpetrator is a 33-year-old German citizen. He was arrested and jailed. The motive has not been released, nor has the suspect's identity. Several German media outlets said this was an act of terror and not an accident. Leipzig's mayor, Burkhard Jung, said police informed him the suspect is being investigated for two counts of murder and multiple counts of attempted murder. He is expected to appear before a judge tomorrow.
