A small change in your daily diet may have a surprisingly positive effect on your mental health. A new study published in the British Journal of Nutrition examined how increasing the consumption of plant-based foods affects people's overall well-being. Researchers followed adults who typically ate very few fruits and vegetables and asked them to make one simple dietary change.

How the Study Was Conducted

The study, whose findings were also reported by StudyFinds, lasted four weeks and included 42 healthy men and women between the ages of 18 and 65.

At the start of the study, participants consumed no more than two servings of fruits and vegetables per day. They were divided into three groups:

  • A control group that continued its usual diet

  • A group that was asked to reach a target of five daily servings of whole fruits and vegetables

  • A third group that followed the same goal but was allowed to include one daily serving of 150 milliliters of 100% natural fruit juice or a smoothie

The Surprising Results

The results surprised the researchers, particularly in the group that incorporated the natural beverage.

Participants who added a daily serving of juice as part of their diet reported fewer symptoms of depression and scored lower on depression assessments compared to the other groups.

In contrast, there were no significant changes in anxiety levels or in short-term metabolic health markers such as blood sugar, blood fat levels, and inflammatory markers.

What the Researchers Say

Dr. Oliver Shannon, one of the study's lead researchers, explained in an interview with Chronicle Live:

"Our study shows that drinking a daily glass of fruit juice or a smoothie can be part of the solution that helps people achieve the recommended target of five servings of fruits and vegetables per day. The finding that juice drinkers had lower depression scores is encouraging and deserves further investigation, particularly among people experiencing poor mental well-being. Simple dietary changes, such as increasing fruit consumption, including through a daily glass of juice, may play a role in supporting mental health."

Natural fruit juices and smoothies contain vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that may support overall health and well-being. For people who struggle to eat enough fruits and vegetables, a daily glass of juice may be a practical way to increase their intake of beneficial nutrients.

While the exact reasons behind the reduction in depressive symptoms remain unclear, the findings suggest that even modest dietary improvements may have meaningful effects on mental well-being.

A Word of Caution

The researchers emphasize that although natural fruit juices offer valuable nutrients, they should still be consumed in moderation. Whole fruits remain an important part of a healthy diet because they provide fiber and help regulate the body's response to natural sugars.

More research is needed to better understand the connection between fruit consumption, juice intake, and mental health. However, these findings offer encouraging evidence that small dietary changes could potentially contribute to improved emotional well-being.
