Lahmajoun is one of those dishes that delivers incredible flavor with surprisingly little effort. Traditionally made with a thin crust topped with seasoned meat and baked until crisp, it's a popular street food throughout the Middle East and beyond.
This simplified version uses store bought dough or pita, making it perfect for busy weeknights when you want something quick, satisfying, and packed with flavor.
Easy Homemade Lahmajoun
Ingredients (Makes 4 Flatbreads)
4 pieces prepared pizza dough, thin pita, Iraqi pita, or large tortillas
1 cup prepared tomato sauce, pizza sauce, or seasoned crushed tomatoes
1 pound ground beef, lamb, or chicken, seasoned with:
Salt, to taste
Black pepper, to taste
1 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon cumin
Directions
Prepare the Base
Preheat the oven to 400°F.
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Place the dough, pita, or tortillas on the prepared baking sheet. If using pita, you can cut it in half to create a thinner, crispier base.
Add the Sauce
Spread a thin layer of tomato sauce over each flatbread.
Avoid adding too much sauce, as excess moisture can prevent the crust from becoming crisp.
Add the Meat
Spread the seasoned ground meat evenly over the sauce.
Press the meat gently into the sauce to help it adhere during baking.
Bake
Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the meat is fully cooked and the crust is golden and crisp around the edges.
Easy Ways to Upgrade Your Lahmajoun
Sprinkle chopped fresh parsley on top before serving.
Add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice for brightness.
Drizzle with a little olive oil before baking for extra richness.
Serve with a side salad, pickles, or tahini sauce.
For a vegan version, substitute the meat with seasoned crumbled tofu.
