Syria’s President: "We’re Working Toward a Security Agreement With Israel"

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa said today (Sunday) in an interview with Al Jazeera that he is working "to reach a security agreement with Israel in partnership with several countries. If a security agreement with Israel succeeds, then it will pave the way for comprehensive peace without Syria giving up its right to the occupied Golan Heights."

Al-Sharaa also addressed U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal that Syria "deal with Hezbollah," saying: "We have no intention of carrying out any military intervention in Lebanon. We are discussing solutions with the Lebanese government that will help bring Lebanon to a safe place. The solution in Lebanon is not necessarily a security solution."

Even so, the Syrian president acknowledged that "any chaos in Lebanon will directly affect the situation in Syria. We support the Lebanese state’s monopoly on weapons and on decisions regarding war and peace. We are also concerned about the expansion of the war in the region. We are avoiding confrontation with Israel and have no interest in it."
