A New Flashpoint: Ukraine Hits Russian-Iranian Ship in the Caspian Sea, Tehran Threatens Harsh Response

Iran’s Foreign Ministry today (Sunday) condemned Ukraine following an attack on a Russian ship in the Caspian Sea. The vessel was operated by Iranian crews and transported equipment from Russia to Iran and back. In a statement released by Iran, it was said that the attack caused a deadly explosion in which one sailor was killed and another was wounded.

In Tehran, officials described the incident as a "criminal act of aggression constituting a serious violation of the UN Charter." The Iranians called on the Security Council to intervene and accused Kyiv of trying to widen the circle of the regional war.

Alongside the official response, sources in the Revolutionary Guards threatened Ukraine and said it would "pay for the attack. We will not remain silent about this." Iran claims that Ukraine has become a "legitimate target" because of the interceptor drone assistance it provided to countries in the Middle East region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Kyiv carried out long-range strikes against Iranian vessels transporting military equipment from Russia to Iran and back. Zelensky emphasized that "Russia is helping Iran and providing it with satellite images to direct attacks in the Middle East."
