What You’ll Need
- 2 cups flour
- 1 cup milk, water, or white wine
- 1½ tablespoons butter
- 3 to 4 eggs
- 2 to 3 tablespoons sugar
- Juice of half a lemon
- A pinch of salt
- Oil, for deep frying
- Powdered sugar, for serving
How to Make Romanian Gogoși
Heat the milk, water, or white wine in a pot together with the salt and butter. Once the mixture comes to a boil, remove it from the heat and add the flour, stirring continuously with a wooden spoon.
Return the pot to low heat and continue stirring until the dough comes together and pulls away from the sides of the pot. Remove from the heat and let it cool for a few minutes.
Add the lemon juice and sugar. Then add the eggs one at a time, mixing thoroughly after each addition. Continue until you have a smooth batter that is neither too runny nor too stiff.
Heat enough oil for deep frying. Carefully drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil, working in batches so you do not overcrowd the pot. Fry until the gogoși are golden.
Remove from the oil and allow any excess oil to drain. Before serving, dust generously with powdered sugar.
Serve warm and enjoy!
