When we think about noise that can damage our hearing, we usually picture a loud concert, music blasting through headphones, or heavy machinery in a factory. But an unusual case reported in China is a reminder that even completely natural sounds can become a problem when they are loud enough and continue for long periods.

An 18-year-old reportedly required medical treatment after spending more than four hours exposed to the intense, high-pitched sound of cicadas. Afterward, he noticed a significant change in his hearing and was diagnosed with temporary hearing loss.

While the case itself is unusual, the principle behind it is well known: When it comes to hearing damage, it is not only the source of the sound that matters. Volume and duration of exposure are also important.

Can Cicadas Really Be That Loud?

Cicadas are a familiar part of summer in many warm regions. Male cicadas produce their distinctive calls to attract females, and when large numbers gather in one area, the combined noise can become remarkably loud.

In the case reported in China, the young man spent more than four hours surrounded by the insects’ continuous, piercing calls. Afterward, he noticed that his hearing had changed and sought medical evaluation and treatment.

His hearing loss was reportedly temporary. But the fact that hearing eventually returns does not mean that repeated exposure to excessive noise is harmless.

How Can Loud Noise Suddenly Make Us Hear Less?

Deep inside the inner ear are delicate sensory cells that help convert sound vibrations into electrical signals the brain can understand. Prolonged exposure to excessive noise can put stress on this sensitive system.

After loud noise exposure, some people experience temporarily reduced hearing, a sensation that sounds are muffled, or tinnitus, which may sound like ringing or buzzing in the ears.

It is similar to what some people experience after leaving a loud concert or wedding. You step outside and suddenly everything seems quieter or muffled, perhaps accompanied by ringing that continues for a while.

Often, hearing improves after the ears have had time to recover. However, repeated or particularly intense noise exposure can contribute to permanent hearing damage.

Why Can High-Pitched Sounds Be a Concern?

Research into noise-related hearing changes has found that certain higher frequencies can be particularly vulnerable following loud-noise exposure.

A 2026 study published in Hearing Research examined temporary changes in hearing thresholds following noise exposure. Researchers found that temporary changes were especially noticeable at frequencies of 4 and 6 kilohertz, with recovery at some higher frequencies taking longer than at lower ones.

In the study, participants’ hearing thresholds ultimately returned to their previous levels within a week.

This also helps explain why hearing changes are not always immediately obvious. A person may still be able to hold a normal conversation while having greater difficulty detecting particular frequencies.

For the hearing system, the important question is not simply whether the noise comes from a speaker, a machine, or something in nature. How loud it is, how close you are to the source, and how long you remain exposed all matter.

Your Hearing Came Back. Does That Mean Everything Is Fine?

Not necessarily.

A temporary reduction in hearing sensitivity after noise exposure is known as a temporary threshold shift, or TTS. Hearing may gradually return to its previous level after the exposure ends, but repeated or prolonged exposure to loud sounds can eventually cause permanent damage to structures within the ear.

That damage may lead to irreversible hearing loss or persistent tinnitus.

The issue is particularly important for young people. The World Health Organization has estimated that more than one billion young people worldwide could be at risk of preventable hearing loss because of unsafe listening practices.

When Should You Get Your Hearing Checked?

If you notice ringing in your ears, muffled hearing, a feeling of fullness in the ear, or difficulty understanding speech after spending time in a loud environment, pay attention to how long the symptoms last.

Sudden hearing loss, particularly in one ear, should be treated as a medical concern and evaluated promptly. Persistent or worsening hearing changes also warrant medical attention rather than assuming that your ears simply need time to “rest.”

The unusual cicada case offers a useful reminder: A sound does not have to come from headphones, speakers, or machinery to be potentially harmful. When noise is loud enough and lasts long enough, even the sounds of nature can give our ears more than they can comfortably handle.
