Before It Began: Police Shut Down Palestinian Authority-Linked Event in Jerusalem’s Old City

Police said Tuesday that intelligence activity by the central unit of the Jerusalem District led to the discovery of preparations for a ceremony that had been planned for Monday at a compound inside Jerusalem’s Old City. The event was identified as being connected to the Palestinian Authority.

The findings gathered about the organizing effort reinforced the assessment that it constituted a violation of the Implementation Law, which restricts the Palestinian Authority’s political activity within Israel. The findings were presented for review and approval to Police Commissioner Danny Levy and Jerusalem District Commander Avshalom Peled. As a result, an order was issued prohibiting the event from taking place.

Police said that detectives from the central unit and officers from the David precinct arrived at the compound, noticed the preparations and several people there, and informed them of the order barring the event.

Police noted that the Jerusalem District continues to work to prevent conferences and events linked to the Palestinian Authority that violate the law, alongside intelligence and enforcement activity in East Jerusalem and throughout the Old City area.
