Athens Taxi Driver Arrested After Allegedly Charging Israeli Family €600 for Airport Ride

An Israeli family vacationing in Athens was allegedly caught in a threatening encounter after a taxi driver demanded hundreds of euros for a ride from the airport to the city center. About two weeks after the incident, the driver was arrested, and Greek police are now investigating whether he was involved in a similar case in which another tourist was asked to pay an even higher amount.

The incident took place on the night of August 13, shortly after the family landed at Athens International Airport. According to Greek police (ELAS), as reported by local media, the family got into a taxi at the airport and asked to be taken to the hotel where they were staying in the center of the capital.

When they arrived at the hotel, the 38-year-old driver allegedly demanded that they pay €600 for the ride, an amount significantly higher than the legal fare, which is about €55. The family refused the demand, but the driver then allegedly threatened them with violence and prevented them from leaving the taxi or retrieving their luggage.

Under the circumstances, the family was forced to pay the full amount the driver demanded. Only after payment were they able to leave the situation and get their belongings back.

Immediately after the incident, the family contacted the Crime Prevention and Investigation Department in the Syntagma area of central Athens and filed a complaint. Police then opened an investigation and began gathering evidence in an effort to trace the suspect's identity. Among other things, digital information was collected, which investigators allegedly used to identify the driver and the taxi he was operating.

Based on the findings, a case was opened against the driver on suspicion of robbery, and an arrest warrant was issued. On the morning of August 25, officers located and arrested the 38-year-old. He was later brought before the Athens Court of First Instance.

Investigators are also examining the possibility that the incident involving the Israeli family was not the only one. Greek police are reviewing another complaint filed by a tourist, who alleged that the same driver tried to charge him €800 for a ride. The investigation is ongoing, and the Athens prosecutor's office is involved in the continued handling of the case.
