Moscow’s Main Oil Refinery Catches Fire in Massive Ukrainian Drone Attack

Ukraine launched more than 1,500 drones deep into Russian territory overnight between Sunday and Monday, including hundreds aimed at the capital, Moscow. Authorities said at least three people were killed, including a 44-year-old woman and a 74-year-old man, and at least 20 others were injured.

One strike targeted the city’s main oil refinery, which was hit and caught fire. The facility supplies nearly half of the fuel needed by the city. One of the drones also struck a 21-story building in Moscow, sparking a fire and forcing 400 residents to evacuate their homes. Russia’s Defense Ministry said its forces intercepted roughly 1,100 drones in total. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin described the assault as “the largest drone attack ever” on Russia’s capital.

Over the past day, Ukraine and Russia have continued attacking each other’s energy infrastructure, despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s call earlier today for both sides to end the war, which he said is claiming tens of thousands of lives every month.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on social media that Kyiv used a range of missiles and drones in the attack, including domestically produced Flamingo and Pelican missiles, to strike oil and logistics facilities. “These are billions of dollars that finance the war machine,” Zelensky said.

Meanwhile, Russia attacked several cities across Ukraine today. A total of 172 explosive drones were launched toward Kyiv. A Russian strike hit a gas station in the city of Zhytomyr; in Zaporizhzhia, a shopping mall was completely destroyed, and the historic building of the local university was also damaged. One person was killed in Kharkiv, and another was killed in the city of Sumy.
