Give Plain Cream Cheese an Upgrade With These 5 Easy Ideas

Turn plain cream cheese into something special with five easy flavor combinations, from garlic and herbs to honey, cinnamon, and nuts.

aA

Cream cheese is one of those foods that requires almost no effort. Open the container, add some bread, a bagel, or crackers, and you already have something perfectly good to eat.

But if you are someone who is always looking for a little more flavor, plain cream cheese is also the perfect blank canvas.

With just a few simple ingredients, you can turn an ordinary container of cream cheese into something that feels completely different. Herbs, garlic, olives, honey, nuts, roasted peppers, and sun-dried tomatoes can all transform it in minutes.

Best of all, you do not need a food processor or any special equipment. A bowl, a spoon, and about five minutes are enough.

Each recipe below starts with one 7-ounce (200-gram) container of cream cheese. For easier mixing, take the cream cheese out of the refrigerator about 10 minutes beforehand so it has a chance to soften slightly.

1. Garlic and herb cream cheese

This may be the most classic upgrade, but there is a reason it works so well. Serve it on toast, bagels, or crackers, spread it on a vegetable sandwich, or use it as a dip for fresh vegetables.

What you’ll need:

  • 7 ounces (200 grams) cream cheese
  • 1 small garlic clove, crushed
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • A pinch of salt
  • A little black pepper
  • A few drops of lemon juice
  • Chopped fresh herbs of your choice, such as parsley, cilantro, chives, dill, mint, za’atar, or basil, properly checked and cleaned as required

How to make it:

Mix everything together in a small bowl until well combined. Taste before adding more salt, since cream cheese can already be fairly salty.

If you have time, refrigerate the spread for about 30 minutes before serving. This gives the garlic and herbs time to flavor the cheese and makes the finished spread even better.

2. Za’atar and olive oil cream cheese

This version takes just a few minutes but looks and tastes far more impressive than the effort involved.

What you’ll need:

  • 7 ounces (200 grams) cream cheese
  • 1 to 1½ teaspoons za’atar
  • 1 tablespoon good-quality olive oil
  • A little lemon juice
  • Optional: a few chopped green or black olives

How to make it:

Mix the cream cheese with half the za’atar and a little lemon juice.

Transfer it to a small serving plate and use the back of a spoon to create a few swirls or indentations on the surface. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle the remaining za’atar over the top.

If you have olives on hand, chop a few and scatter them over the cheese.

Serve with warm pita, toast, crackers, or fresh vegetables for an easy breakfast or appetizer that looks much more elaborate than it actually is.

3. Roasted red pepper cream cheese

Roasted red pepper adds sweetness and depth, while a little paprika gives this spread even more flavor.

What you’ll need:

  • 7 ounces (200 grams) cream cheese
  • ½ roasted red pepper, finely chopped
  • ½ teaspoon sweet paprika
  • A pinch of smoked paprika, if available
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • A little salt and black pepper

How to make it:

Gently squeeze or drain the roasted pepper first to remove excess liquid, then chop it finely and mix it with the cream cheese, paprika, olive oil, salt, and pepper.

Set aside a few pieces of pepper to scatter over the top before serving.

If you like a little heat, add crushed red pepper flakes, finely chopped hot pepper, or a few drops of hot sauce.

This version is also delicious in a sandwich with hard-boiled eggs or an omelet.

4. Honey, cinnamon, and nut cream cheese

Cream cheese does not have to be savory. With honey, cinnamon, and nuts, it can easily become a sweet spread for breakfast, brunch, or an afternoon snack.

What you’ll need:

  • 7 ounces (200 grams) cream cheese
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons chopped walnuts or pecans
  • A little vanilla extract, if available

How to make it:

Mix the cream cheese with the honey, cinnamon, and vanilla until smooth. Stir in half of the chopped nuts.

Transfer to a small bowl, scatter the remaining nuts over the top, and finish with a thin drizzle of honey.

For something extra, add finely diced apple, raisins, or a little orange zest.

It is also a great option when you want something sweet with your coffee but do not feel like making an actual dessert.

5. Sun-dried tomato and olive cream cheese

Have an open jar of sun-dried tomatoes sitting in the refrigerator? This is an easy way to put them to good use.

What you’ll need:

  • 7 ounces (200 grams) cream cheese
  • 3 to 4 oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes
  • 4 to 5 olives
  • A little basil or oregano
  • 1 teaspoon oil from the sun-dried tomato jar
  • A little black pepper

How to make it:

Finely chop the sun-dried tomatoes and olives, then stir them into the cream cheese.

Add a teaspoon of oil from the tomato jar, a little basil or oregano, and some black pepper.

You probably will not need any additional salt, since both the olives and sun-dried tomatoes are already quite salty.

Serve it on bagels or sandwiches, or put it out with crackers when entertaining.

Make it your own

One of the best things about cream cheese is how forgiving it is.

Take a look through the refrigerator and use what you already have: a leftover scallion, half a roasted pepper, a handful of olives, or some herbs that need to be used up.

The pantry offers even more possibilities. Try toasted sesame seeds, za’atar, nuts, paprika, chili flakes, honey, or your favorite spices.

Just keep one simple rule in mind: ingredients with a high water content, such as cucumber, roasted pepper, or fresh tomato, should be drained or gently squeezed before being mixed into the cream cheese. Otherwise, your spread can become watery.

And if you are serving guests, you do not need to buy five separate containers. Divide one large container of cream cheese among several small bowls and flavor each one differently.

In just a few minutes, plain cream cheese can become an entire spread.
