The average person accumulates about 2 to 8 extra kilograms of waste in the colon. Its inner surface, with all its twists and intestinal villi, would cover the area of a tennis court. It is therefore understandable that such a large space contains many hidden places where waste can remain.
Why Proper Digestion Is Essential for Health
For the sake of maintaining health, it is extremely important that food move properly through the digestive system, and that waste does as well. If waste does not pass properly through the colon, it accumulates, decays, hardens, and may cause many problems such as constipation, parasites, abdominal pain, digestive disorders, damage to the immune system, weight gain, chronic illness, and even emotional challenges like depression.
A wise person guards their wellbeing. If we protect ourselves and prevent illness through a healthy lifestyle, we can merit a life of vitality that allows us to serve God with joy.
What Does a Healthy Lifestyle Really Mean?
A healthy lifestyle includes eating nourishing foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, seeds, legumes, grains, and nuts. In addition, every person needs clean air, balanced exercise, proper breathing, pure drinking water, emotional joy, sufficient sleep, spiritual nourishment, music, healthy social connections, sunlight, and most importantly, personal prayer and direct conversation with God each day.
All these elements together allow a life filled with purpose, fulfillment, and genuine health.
Modern Life and the Loss of Natural Balance
Modern society teaches people how to earn a living but not how to care for their body and soul. As a result, many suffer from illnesses rooted in poor nutrition and an unnatural lifestyle. Today men, women, and children often consume toxin-heavy foods that lead to widespread malnutrition.
When the body receives the nutrients it truly needs, alongside a balanced lifestyle, body and soul begin to function in harmony, leading toward complete wellbeing.
The Body Is Like a Vehicle: Choose the Right Fuel
A person wouldn’t fill a diesel car with the wrong type of fuel, and yet many people nourish their bodies daily with sugary drinks and processed foods. Just as a car fails when given the wrong fuel, the body also struggles — only the damage appears slowly, over years.
The Creator made the human body resilient and forgiving. Even after years of imbalance, it is often possible to begin restoring health.
The Hidden Dangers of Processed Foods
Supermarkets offer endless products designed to attract attention, but the goal of many food companies is profit rather than health. To extend shelf life, foods are often filled with preservatives, artificial flavors, colors, excessive salt, sugar, and fats.
These substances accumulate in the body as toxic waste. Therefore, consumers must become wise and attentive, by choosing natural foods whenever possible, reading labels carefully, and avoiding ingredients that are unclear or unfamiliar.
Toxins, Medicine, and Understanding Illness
Beyond toxins in food, modern medicine often focuses on external causes of illness such as bacteria or viruses, sometimes creating dependency on medications. According to this perspective, many illnesses stem from accumulated toxins in the body, affecting areas of personal genetic vulnerability.
Understanding this encourages people to take greater responsibility for their daily habits and overall wellbeing.
Our Sages teach that most premature deaths occur because people neglect their health. Although each person’s lifespan is determined from above, human choices can shorten those years. The commandment “Guard your lives” calls us to actively preserve our health and environment so that we may live longer, more meaningful lives and continue developing spiritually.
