Chopped Liver Spread Recipe: A Classic Shabbat Appetizer with a Time-Saving Shortcut

Perfect served cold with fresh challah, it's a traditional Shabbat favorite your guests won't stop eating

aA

Even if our weekday dinners usually consist of simple favorites like pasta, schnitzel, or the occasional soup, Shabbat is the perfect time to serve something a little more special and flavorful.

There’s nothing quite like a rich, creamy chopped liver spread to start a Shabbat meal alongside a fresh challah. This version is so delicious that if you're hosting guests, you may want to double the recipe. Best of all, it includes a clever shortcut that skips the hassle of roasting liver yourself and gets you straight to the good part.

Easy and Delicious Chopped Liver Spread

Ingredients

  • 2 packages ready-made roasted liver (available in the refrigerated section of many supermarkets)

  • 4 large onions, chopped and sautéed in oil until golden brown

  • 4 hard-boiled eggs

  • Slightly less than ⅓ cup canola oil

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Place the roasted liver, hard-boiled eggs, canola oil, sautéed onions, salt, and pepper into a meat grinder or food processor.

  2. Blend until completely smooth and spreadable.

  3. Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed.

  4. The texture should be creamy and easy to spread, but not runny.

  5. Make sure everything is thoroughly blended.

Serving Suggestion

Serve chilled alongside fresh challah. You can add onion jam if you like, but honestly, this spread is flavorful enough to shine on its own.

Shabbat Shalom and enjoy!
