Ingredients

  • 10 matzah sheets

  • 500 g (1 lb) ground beef

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 potato

  • 2 onions

  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste

  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika, sweet or hot, according to taste

  • 1/4 teaspoon meat or chicken seasoning

  • Salt and black pepper to taste

  • Oil

Instructions

Thoroughly moisten the matzah sheets with water, then wrap them in a clean kitchen towel while you prepare the filling.

Finely dice the onions and sauté them until golden. Add the ground beef and cook for a few minutes, stirring occasionally, until the meat is browned. Remove from the heat and allow the mixture to cool.

Peel the potato, boil it until tender, and mash it until smooth. Combine the mashed potato with the cooked ground beef, then add the eggs, tomato paste, paprika, meat seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until fully combined.

Lightly grease a baking dish and arrange a layer of softened matzah on the bottom. Spread a generous layer of the meat mixture evenly over the matzah. Add another layer of matzah, followed by another layer of meat. Continue layering until all the filling has been used, finishing with a final layer of matzah.

Brush the top layer generously with oil.

Bake in a preheated moderate oven for about 40 minutes, or until the top is golden and crisp. Serve warm.
