3 Simple Steps to Organize Your Home After the Holidays

The holidays are over, but don’t just shove everything into a closet. These simple storage tips will keep your dishes, tablecloths, and decorations organized for next time.

The holidays are over, the guests have gone home, and now comes the less exciting part: putting everything away.

It may be tempting to quickly pile the serving dishes, tablecloths, and decorations into the nearest available closet and deal with them next year. But spending a little extra time organizing everything now can save you a lot of frustration when the holidays come around again.

Here’s how to pack everything away so that next time, you can actually find what you need.

Sort Before You Store

Before putting anything away, decide what is actually worth keeping.

Is that decoration broken? Is there a serving dish you never use? Are you holding onto something simply because it has always been in the holiday box?

There is no reason for damaged or unwanted items to take up valuable storage space for another year. This is also a good opportunity to gather similar items that may have ended up scattered across different closets, drawers, or shelves.

Clean Everything Before It Goes Away

Wash and thoroughly dry serving dishes, trays, and festive tableware before storing them. Delicate pieces can be separated with packing paper or a soft cloth, and they should be placed somewhere they will not be crushed beneath heavier items.

Tablecloths should also be washed according to their care instructions and allowed to dry completely before being folded and stored.

Pay particular attention to stains. A mark that seems minor now may be much harder to remove after sitting in a closet for months. Treating it before storage means one less unpleasant surprise when you pull the tablecloth out next holiday.

Keep Holiday Items Together

Instead of spreading decorations across different drawers and closets, designate one box or storage area for them. Wrap fragile pieces individually and keep the container somewhere dry and protected from moisture.

It also helps to group items according to how you use them. Keep table decorations together, for example, rather than storing half with the serving dishes and the other half in a storage room.

The goal is simple: when the next holiday arrives, you should be able to open one box or one section of the closet and immediately find what you need.

Organizing after the holidays may be the last thing you feel like doing. But a few extra minutes now can save you from digging through closets, searching for missing decorations, or discovering stained tablecloths next year.

Your future self will be very glad you did it.
