Barack Obama Faces Criticism Over Remarks on Israel and Jewish History

The former U.S. president’s comments on Zionism, Palestinian claims, and the founding of Israel drew criticism from The Daily Wire and HonestReporting, which accused him of overlooking thousands of years of Jewish connection to the Land of Israel

Former U.S. President Barack Obama sparked criticism after claiming at an event in Northern Ireland that “Jews who came to the Land of Israel were seeking refuge, but they took land from other people in an excessive way.” The remarks were reported today, Thursday, by Israel’s Channel 14.

Obama took part in a conversation with journalist and author Susan McKay at an event held at the O2 arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland, before an audience of thousands. At the beginning of his remarks on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Obama acknowledged “the historical suffering of the Jewish people and Europe’s responsibility for persecution and the Holocaust.”

“Obviously, Jews were seeking refuge,” he said. “At the same time, what is also beyond dispute is that they took land from other people, and they went too far. Local residents felt that they had been wronged.”

Critics Point to the Broader Historical Context

According to the report, commentators and historians noted that this one-sided description overlooks the complexity of Zionist settlement. This included the legal purchase of land at full price from landowners, including Arabs living in the region as well as absentee landowners living abroad.

Critics also pointed out that Jewish communities had existed in the Land of Israel for many generations before the emergence of the modern Zionist movement.

Obama Criticizes Israeli Policy

Obama also criticized the policies of Israel’s current government. He argued that if Israel relies solely on its military and technological power to act without compromise, it risks abandoning its moral foundation.

Obama called on Israelis to recognize that millions of Palestinians live in the region and are not going to disappear. He asked the audience whether Israelis intend to live forever behind walls while trying to eliminate everyone around them.

Regarding Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack, Obama argued that it ran counter to Palestinian interests because Israel is too strong to be defeated by force. He said Palestinians should instead adopt nonviolent methods of struggle and make moral arguments.

The Daily Wire Accuses Obama of Revising Jewish History

The conservative media outlet The Daily Wire, co-founded by Jewish pro-Israel commentator Ben Shapiro, accused Obama of “erasing more than 3,000 years of Jewish history” and presenting a “revisionist picture” of the establishment of the State of Israel.

In its report, The Daily Wire argued that Obama’s comments implied that Jewish history had no connection to the establishment of Israel and framed the Jewish state solely as a response to the Holocaust, while accusing Jews of taking the land.

“Obama presented a revisionist picture of Israel’s founding, claiming that Jews simply fled European oppression and took land from local populations,” the outlet wrote.

The Daily Wire also cited HonestReporting, a media-monitoring organization, which argued that Obama’s remarks erased 3,000 years of Jewish connection to the region:

“According to Barack Obama, Jews fled Europe, arrived on someone else’s land, and became ‘excessive.’ What is conveniently omitted is the Jewish people’s millennia-old connection to the Land of Israel and centuries of continuous Jewish presence there. Israel’s legitimacy did not begin with persecution in Europe. Neither did Jewish history.”
