At least seven people were killed and dozens more injured overnight Saturday into Sunday in an explosion and massive fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta, Canada. The incident occurred at one of the Canadian military's main training bases and prompted authorities to declare a medical emergency in Edmonton, where many of the injured were taken for treatment. Emergency crews are continuing their efforts to bring the fire under control and determine the circumstances surrounding the disaster.

According to Canadian news network Global News, the fire broke out following a live-fire military exercise during which troops reportedly struck a gas pipeline or gas well on the base. The impact allegedly triggered a powerful explosion, igniting a fire that spread rapidly. Severe weather conditions worsened the situation, with wind gusts reaching speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour (62 mph), fueling the flames.

Canada's Minister of National Defence, David McGuinty, confirmed that the incident had resulted in fatalities and injuries. He said the Canadian Armed Forces were working closely with local authorities to contain the fire and investigate its cause. Describing the situation as ongoing and particularly sensitive, McGuinty added, "I don't recall an incident like this in recent times."

Medical Emergency Declared as Hospitals Face Surge of Casualties

As firefighters battled the blaze, regional healthcare services struggled to cope with the large number of casualties. An intensive care physician at an Alberta hospital told CBC that a medical emergency had been declared in Edmonton following the incident. According to the physician, injured individuals were transported to several hospitals throughout the city, while additional medical personnel were called in to assist with their treatment.

The physician described an extraordinary strain on medical services, noting that healthcare facilities at the military base were "completely overwhelmed" by the number of people requiring treatment. He added that the region had not experienced an emergency of this magnitude in 15 to 25 years.

Canadian Leaders Respond to the Tragedy

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed the incident in a post on X, describing it as a "serious incident" that had caused a major fire.

"Our thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected by this incident. We are working closely with the Government of Alberta and local authorities," he wrote.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also responded to the disaster, calling it a "significant and tragic fire." She said the incident had affected numerous military personnel serving in the province and emphasized that Alberta authorities were maintaining continuous contact with the federal government to coordinate the emergency response and investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire.

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe announced that his province had already dispatched resources to assist Alberta and was prepared to provide further support if necessary. Meanwhile, British Columbia Premier David Eby said his government had contacted Alberta authorities and offered any assistance they might need.

Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, where the fire occurred, is located in the western Canadian province of Alberta and is considered one of the country's busiest military training facilities. The base is home to major training centers and is also used for exercises involving field units stationed in the region.
